MY RESEARCH TOPIC: Assessing the relationship between depression and anxiety from the perspective student academic performance

Research Aim: Emotional disturbance is considered to be a psychological element that can lead to the deterioration of the daily activities of students. Since, academic achievements are an integral dimension of students’ lives, depression, anxiety and other forms of emotional disturbance might lead to poor academic performance. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to assess the relationship between depression and anxiety on student academic performance

AFTER COMPLETING THE INITIAL POST, PLEASE ALSO RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING TWO STUDENTS REGARDING THE SAME TOPIC!

STUDENT ONE:

For my final project, I will focus on one of my students that I will refer to as “student T”. I am a special education teacher for students in grades K-2. Student T was a new kindergarten student to our school district and started the school year 2 months late. At the time of enrollment, his grandmother expressed concerns for his academic abilities because had never attended school before. At her request, a psychoeducational evaluation was preformed. The results of this evaluation concluded that student T had an intellectual disability.

Based on these results, his IEP was developed and a plan was made alongside the IEP team in order to best support student T in school. I will use my first hand experience and collected data to complete the necessary requirements of the final project. I will also protect the identity of student T by eliminating any unnecessary information that may be sensitive to his idenitity.

STUDENT TWO:

My mom has been a teacher since she was 21 years old. She is now 65 and retired but for over 20 years of her teaching career, she was a special education teacher. Before she retired, she mentioned how she received notice of a new student that was to be in her classroom the following semester. Once she reviewed his paperwork she said she was unsure of why this student was put in her class. His grades were above average and overall socially he was a typical fourth-grade student. It was not until she witnessed his reaction to a disruption in his schedule, for example, a missed PE class that she recognized that he was on the spectrum. The story was so interesting to me because Autism Spectrum disorder has such a wide range that there really is not a typical description of what one student with ASD may experience. ASD can vary so much from student to student.

For my final project, I have decided to focus on the fictional character Sam from the Netflix series ATYPICAL. This series is about a teenage boy who is on the Autism spectrum. The show follows his family and shows the struggles that Sam faced and faces as a student, a brother, and as a teenager. From the outside, Sam appears to be a typical teenage boy but throughout the show, you learn how much Sam overcame as a child and see how he overcomes new challenges as a teenager.
